He uses his left thumb far less than most piano players. I wonder if he uses that as an anchor point because he can't see.
I have NEVER played with my thumb against the edge of the key shelf lime that, but then I don't need to.
It's obviously on purpose because he brings it up to use it now & then, but right back it goes.
I've not seen anyone do that before.
