Top Iowa Democrat airs grievances with outgoing party chairwoman in fiery letter [View all]

Danny Homan, an Iowa labor leader and one of the most prominent Democratic activists in the state, fired off a blistering critique of the outgoing Iowa Democratic Party chairwoman before resigning from a party office last weekend.

Homan, the president of the AFSCME Council 61 public employees union, blamed now-former party Chairwoman Andy McGuire for widespread losses in last November’s election and what he said are lingering divisions within the party.

The excoriation came on Jan. 20 in a letter obtained by The Des Moines Register in which Homan announced his resignation as 1st Vice-Chairman of the state party. It is significant not only because of Homan’s role, but also because of McGuire’s: After declining to seek another term as chairwoman, she’s widely expected to run for governor in 2018.

“This decision (to resign) was reached from a culmination of frustrations with the direction of the Iowa Democratic Party, first and foremost the lack of unity following the Iowa Caucuses,” Homan wrote in the letter. “The division between Sanders and Clinton supporters has driven a wedge that has yet to be repaired.”
