Research can provide extra pay for summer months perhaps, when a professor would not be paid for teaching. But leading scientists would often get grants for other studies even if not for climate research. And climate scientists could get unlimited funding from Koch brothers to do research debunking climate change. Indeed a physics professor at UC Berkeley did get a million dollar grant from the Koch brothers to prove the measurements for the hockey stick graph were false. He concluded, to his surprise, that the hockey stick measures of temperature were dead on correct. He changed his views, concluded human caused warming really is true. And got no more money from the Koch brothers.
