My wife has been using an app on her cellphone called My Fitness Pal. It is essentially a calories counter, very accurate and easy/convenient to use. You program it with your current weight, target weight, daily activity level, etc. and it apportions you a set amount of calories for the day.

You simply punch in everything you eat during the day and it assigns a caloric value to it, allowing you to keep a running count of how much potential intake remains during each day (and accounting for any exercise you tell it you have done, walking, etc).

It has an exceptionally large database of foods, both generic and specific (generic being "one stalk of celery" specific being "Subway Veggie Delight sandwich" or "one Wendy's French fry" etc.) A whole range of foods you might think wouldn't be in there are in there.

As I said, it isn't going to teach you what to eat, but is an exceptionally convenient way go keep track of how much you eat in the context of what you need to either lose weight, or maintain a healthy weight.

My wife swears by it. She has battled excess weight all her life.

She has lost 28 pounds over the last 4 months, and has 12 more to go to reach her optimum weight.
