12. 1957, one of our last road trips across country, my dad was a Marine

We had been in the car all day, it was dark. My dad said, we're stopping at the next motel and if they don't allow pets Nellie can sleep in the car. She'll be fine, he said. Nellie was our 9yo white boxer. We were all tired, nobody said a word.

about an hour later we stop at a well lit, nice looking motel and my dad went into the office. A few minutes later he came out, started the car and we drove off.. mom said, no rooms? Dad said, "they don't allow pets..."
