I'm pretty sure the people who thought this shit up are the same kinds of people who shoot up Sikh temples thinking they are Muslims (that's on the same level of stupidity as blowing up a white southern Baptist church because you thought they were Jewish).
As we used to say to the girls in my high school (post 9/11), "Take off your clothes or the terrorists win!"
--Part to show how stupid the knee-jerk anti-Muslim histeria was, part because we were 16-year-old boys
