(22,336 posts)I was picking up something from a drug store, and a young white guy (maybe 20 to 22) came in wanting cigarettes, and the woman working there was helping me and couldn't get to him, so she told him to just walk into the (unlocked, obviously) caged area where the cigarettes are and grab what he wanted and then get into line. I always thought those were kept locked but maybe it's just the visual of the cage that's supposed to keep people out.
I wondered if that would have happened if he'd been black, and I knew the answer.
I have no doubt you're right about what happened.
Anyone who doesn't see that white people have privilege is IMO intentionally not looking. You were the victim of racism, but the pick-up truck driver received privilege. The kid who wanted cigarettes also did. It's a big, fat, DUH.
