(23,156 posts)what life is like for someone who is constantly guilty of Driving While Black.
I'm a sixty-something year old white lady with undyed gray hair, and every time I get pulled over all I ever get is a nice warning. Apparently even to the (largely Hispanic because this is NM) cops I look enough like mom or grandma that they just can't find it in themselves to ticket me. I am VERY aware of my privilege here, and try never to abuse it.
When my sons were first learning to drive, I told them that they'd get tickets that I wouldn't because of being young males, even if white. Profiling absolutely goes on.
It is beyond infuriating that someone could pull such blatantly illegal maneuvers right in front of the cops and not get ticketed. Maybe, just maybe the driver was someone known to them who himself holds some sort of position of privilege (father in the department?) that there's just no point in pulling him over.
