In reply to the discussion: Will Hillary continue her campaign even under Indictment ?? [View all]karynnj
(60,466 posts)Though I do have a problem with hypotheticals, this is a fascinating question.
Technically, you are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty. It is very likely that if indicted, Clinton will THINK that what she did did not arise to a crime. Now, if she ends her run -- she will have in fact been punished enormously by losing a very strong chance to become President that she will not get again. In addition, she most likely believes that she is the most qualified person to become President and even the most likely Democrat to win.
However, whether she thinks that she will win the case, the case would not even come to trial before the election. This could doom the Democrats. However, I think that once she has the nomination (at the convention), it really is her choice. Even if initial polling shows a steep decline, there could be arguments that over time, she will return to beating Trump. (Not to mention, Trump likely has many more things that he could be in trouble for.)
I guess a summary would be - it would be a mess.
