In reply to the discussion: Sanders says hes on verge of pulling off major political upset [View all]Orrex
(65,786 posts)They know that they'll be giving him free publicity if they pay any attention to him, so why would they waste the energy when it's far from clear that he'll even win the nomination? If he does make it onto the ticket, his lingering obscurity will hurt him and will allow the GOP to control as much of the narrative as possible.
At that point they'll unleash the full force of their attack machine, and despite his supporters' claims, it will be unlike anything Sanders has faced in his career to date. Clinton has long experience with this and has shown that she can shrug it off, but Sanders has never truly been in the GOP's crosshairs. It remains to be seen how he will handle himself in that environment, and I am not confident that he will portray himself favorably.
I know that his supporters believe that he'll be held aloft by the strength of the 99% to vanquish the GOP monster, but there is little to suggest that things will play out that way in reality.
