12. I think it's more about convincing casual readers than real progressives

They want pro-Hillary posts online countering any narrative that goes against her. They probably don't expect to convince anyone they are arguing with, but they want to have a refutation in the conversation for all the people who are reading the thread. Many casual readers are probably less informed and the sock technique might actually be effective with some of them, which is why I sometimes respond to counter the presumed socks. They usually end up on ignore after a pointless exchange.
