Nobody was defending Nixon. His own party leaders in Congress asked him to resign.

That was back when many Republicans still had integrity. At the national level today, there are none left--the only ones who backed impeachment of Trump or served on the Jan. 6 investigative committee have been drummed out office, with the exception of Romney, I believe.
