in order to steal other countries' resources: oil, lithium & other rare earths, etc.

(I believe the conversation between the US and the leaders of such countries is along the lines of, "allow our crony corporations to extract your resources, or we'll replace you with a puppet who'll cooperate – and who'll be rewarded for doing it." )
