WASHINGTON (AP) - As of last week, Americans hadn't abandoned their support of the decision to use military force in Iraq, but they were more skeptical about President Bush's handling of the situation there.
Bush's overall job approval was at 43 percent, a low for his presidency, according to a poll reported on Monday by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press; 47 percent disapproved of his job performance.
That compares with a 90 percent job-approval immediately after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
In the poll taken Thursday through Sunday - after the grisly killing and mutilation of four American contractors - 53 percent said they disapproved of the way Bush was handling Iraq, while 40 percent approved. In a mid-January poll, 60 percent approved.
