That was one of the things he hated about being president, that he couldn't drive his old Mustang.

And you can go visit it in Independence-at least the first floor. Not pretentious. Also heard that Harry mowed his own lawn after retirement. Once he did this on Sunday morning, to the horror of his wife!

He entered the White House as a non-millionaire and left millions in debt because of the GOP's fake scandals.
His book advance saved him.

He bought a house that Hillary had admired in Fayetteville, I think. Then he became governor, then president.

13. And, actually, Reagan |
|
The Reagan's never amassed cash to the millionaire status. He was an actor, Governor of California and a public speaker. The "kitchen cabinet" friends bought his home in Bel Air for them. That's not a defense of Reagan's policies - only his finances.

27. Congress set up the presidential pension |
|
because it was embarrassing the way Truman was living in retirement.
Now in the age of book advances and 50 k speaking fees, it's probably time to get rid of the presidential pension.

Until recent times, former presidents didn't become rich |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-06-04 07:51 PM by kskiska
Becoming president was the final crowning glory of their lives, then they retired and died a few years later. Our presidents are younger now and have time and energy after serving. We can't expect them to just go play golf for the rest of their lives. Of course, * is an exception. I hope he never surfaces again. And his old man, too.
Actually, Gerald Ford was the first former president to cash in big, serving on numerous boards. Until that, aside from an occasional speech, they weren't in great demand.

19. You have to go all the way back to the Clinton years to answer that. |
|
Some people can't believe I know facts from way back then, but what can I say, I gues I'm a genius.
On another note, does anyone think to do the simplest Internet search, or better yet, simply try to remember something more than 10 minutes old before they pose inane questions?
