Is there any chance of a Watergate-type scandal breaking out? |
|
Like Nixon, the current asshole-in-chief is basically using his power to attack anyone he wants, thinking he's above the law; and also, the electronic voting machines are a scam to screw over votes, which could be surmised if anyone had the cajones to start an independent investigation.
Oh well; on January 20, 1973, Nixon was living comfortably in the White House, too, and we all know what happened to him. :D

2. No. That "scandal" became so because dems controlled congress. |
|
It was only "news" when the dems in congress decided to investigate it and hold hearings. The press could just as easily have ignored it, as they ignore Bush's crimes today.
Because we lack the power to vote to investigate Bush's crimes, we will never be able to make them the leading headlines. And the republicans would just vote down any finding or investigation or anything else in nakedly partisan votes.
I doubt we could impeach him if we got videotape of him sacrificing babies and drinking their blood in a black mass.

|
And if he was caught sacrificing babies he would say it was in the national defense interest to do so And the fundies would say that god required the sacrifice and bush was doing gods work on the earth.

17. A "reward for information" is not the answer. |
|
There would be no guarantee that the person wasn't lying in order to be proved wrong in court--thus, discrediting our whole argument.
We know there are people out there with information that could bring this adinistration down, but they're all in league with the administration. So what's needed is for someone with knowledge of a scandal to grow a conscience.
Welcome to DU, princehal. :hi:

If this Social Security thing goes sour, and enough people realize that this is a phase out of social security and not a reform, that could really hurt him too! Bryant Check it out --> http://politicalcomment.blogspot.com

that anything will happen. we know what happened to nixon-an independent press and a senate that was willing to convict him. those two things do not exist now.

Wasn't CBS just at the WH crawling on their knees begging for forgiveness.
Only alternative media will report corruption. Mainstream media will call it looney conspiracies and the general population will stay unaware.

12. I don't think much is going to happen. |
|
There was at least a vestigial free press in 1972-74.
There were Dem majorities--real Dems, not DLC Puggie wannabees in both houses of Congress, so things like special prosecutors & Congressional investigations could be made to happen.
There were a few honest and ethical Republicans around--Goldwater comes to mind.
There were no Limbaughs, Liddys or Norths barking their poisonous, hateful treasons to the masses.

14. NO, because the Elite Media wouldn't report it. |
|
Like el_gato said, Nixon was taken down from elites on the inside.
It's pretty ironic that the right-wing elite took down Nixon and because it was a right-wing elite move, the right-wing Elite Media dutifully reported the story and hence the myth of the "Liberal Media" was born. Headache material.

Just because we're the minority party doesn't mean we can't uncover a scandal. Look at the 100 pages of evidence Conyers and the judiciary democrat staff whipped up. John Dean's book spells out the corruption and secrecy of this administration, and I am confident that Bush's reign will end in scandal.

16. We've had worse than Watergate |
|
for the past four years and the outrage has been only one our side. The American people are numb. As Jon Stewart said months ago, "the facts are now biased against George W. Bush." There's an entire laundry list of crimes committed against us. Worse than Nixon. Definitely worse than Clinton (we miss you, Bill!). But, we're numb. We want to play our video games, download porn, watch reality TV, and eat and drink until we're comatose. Not having a media with integrity doesn't help, either.

18. Nixon was brought down by fellow Republicans. |
|
If some Republicans finally realize that what Bush is doing to their party and it's credibility and by default to their careers, they may go after him before everything crashes. If we attack Bush we are partisan, but if fellow Republicans feel that this cabal is heading into dangerous waters, they may act.

24. Republicans helped at the end |
|
I wouldn't say Republicans brought Nixon down. However, once it was clear he was down (and guilty) there were Republicans like Barry Goldwater who were telling Nixon it was time to go and they would no longer support him. I think that today it would take a lot more for Republicans to discard Bush.

Bush and his criminal cronies have already done things many times worse than anything related to Watergate and got away with it. They have a compliant media who wouldn't dream of trying to publicize a scandal that could hurt the Bushist Regime, and a public that has been brainwashed into giving up its freedom and financial interests to further corporate control of the country.

We need to focus, hard, on '06 and try to take the senate away from the repubs, cause otherwise we'll be spitting into the wind.
