Poll question: Do you get satellite radio? |
|
This talk about the Sirius/XM thing makes me wonder - do many people really shell out bucks FOR RADIO? Blows my mind that so many are discussing it.
Do you get satellite radio?

we have it for 3 months, probably won't renew. I would much rather spend the $15 /month on napster and be able to listen to music on demand. However, this is an intersting concept that will be great if we can get some more competition in the market.

11. There are currently 2, is that competition? |
|
I don't expect there to be a third, think about the startup costs (uhhh.... satellites in SPACE).
Hopefully Sirius will survive so the field isn't narrowed to ONE.

18. Things have a funny way of expanding |
|
to allow smaller companies to start up. As far as I know (I'm not an expert) you can lease space on another satellite. Also, satellites aren't the only way to go, you can use high powered frequencies to do this locally as some tv services do now (we have 2 in our area).
So sure, competition seems unlikely at this point but it doesn't mean it will never happen once the market opens up a bit.

we don't have that many radio stations, and the ones we have pretty much suck. I'd love to have good radio.

the option to listen to whatever I want, whenever I want, with no commercials is appealing. Plus the shear NUMBER of available channels, I think it would be cool, but I don't drive enough or listen to the radio enough to justify it right now.

And I love it. Crappy local radio drove me to it. It is worth every penny, whether you get XM or Sirius. There seems to be a lot of bashing from both sides since the AAR XM exclusivity deal. But I listen to both and both are excellent. I wish AAR could remain on both satellites.

7. Got sick of NPR on the radio |
|
And I need something to listen to on the commute. I prefer a human voice and discussion to music when I'm driving, sometimes I'll switch to discovery or old-time radio for variety, but those programs get repetitious.

8. depends on what your priorities are.... |
|
people blow money on things that I consider wasteful. Personally, I enjoy my satellite radio and LOVE listening to sane liberal talk shows. I support satellite radio as a protest since am/fm has mostly conservative shows and none or very few liberal talk shows. I live in an area that has no liberal talk radio so it is definitely worth the investment for us. I've seen money blown on worse things.

13. Yes, but only in the car right now. |
|
I have a thingy that is supposed to hook up to the sound stuff in the house, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I received Sirius radio for the car for Christmas along with the hook up stuff for the house. But I think I'm going to get the more portable version and just avoid the house speakers. I happened upon that just the other day. I think it's about a hundred dollars, though. That's probably why I didn't get THAT for Christmas with the car version.
I can do needlepoint, counted cross stitch, pot up great plant combinations for the patio, and explain politics to hubby, but unless I stop everything and engage my left brain (which can make me crabby and a bit chilly to be around) I can't hook up electrical stuff. Argghhh.... It makes my brain numb. Hubby travels a lot, and I forget to ask him to do it.
Also, one is supposed to get the Sirius subscription to run through one's computer, but I can't seem to make it work.
Other than those small glitches, it's great. There is more than enough for everyone...unless you drive into a tunnel or under an overpass.

19. If you get the portable version just buy a "Y- Cable" |
|
it will allow you to hook up a cable to the headphones jack and run it to your home stereo. I'm also sure your other kit would be easy to use, the manual might be a good place to start ;).
Hope that helps.

|
And I do mean the thanks. I've been in task avoidance, I didn't even think of the manual. Now, where is it? And I'll have to get down on the floor and pull heavy things out. But you make it sound so simple. :D

http://www.sirius.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Sirius/CachedPage&c=Page&cid=1100707191523Or tell me the model number of your sirus radio and the "thingy that makes it hook up to the sound stuff in the house", I never had sirius but I'm willing to be it's an easy hook up and I'd be happy to help you out.

25. The plug and play home kit and what looks like the Sportster. |
|
But I think I have it figured out. I looked to see if I can plug it into the computer, but there isn't room. So. That leaves the receiver in the family room. It's heavy, in a tight space and hot from being on all day, but my son is working on it.
:D Thanks for your help. You gave me the little nudge that I needed to stop whining and moping and just make it work. And my son now appreciates the versatility, at first, I think he thought it was just politics.

30. I'm asking for the new Delphi boombox for my birthday |
|
I can take my SkyFi out of the car now, but have no need. The newest boombox, has regular FM/AM, CD player (and I think a clock--it was the clock that sold me on it :P ) and you can plug in your SkyFi receiver. Woo hoo.
But I'm really "thrifty" (i.e. cheap) and it's $170 so it's on the birthday wish list.

internets :-) I still listen to my local NPR for classical, news sucks on it but some of the interviews are still good. Now I have to figure out how to get my car hooked into net. Network to my home, then get the same music choices on the road.

16. Little Steven's Underground Garage on Sirius |
|
is the best rock 'n' roll radio I've heard since the early 70s. Lots of cult faves, obscurities and not-overplayed tracks from the biggies stretching from the 50s til now, and they play the Ramones like they were Led Zeppelin!

I probably spend as many as 80-100 days per year driving for my job and on vacations. Satellite radio is great when you're traveling through several states in one day or anywhere in the West. You can only carry so many CDs or songs on an iPod and satellite radio has uncut comedy, old time radio shows, news channels, sports and of course Progressive Radio.
Considering that I pay more per month for HBO than XM (I bought the multi-year plan) I consider it a bargain!

dh works in remote areas where there are no radio signals, so he got satellite radio to keep him occupied. We do have sirius and I'm seriously bummed about AAR.

the satellites they use only cover the 48 contiguous states. So as soon as all the content migrates to satellite, we'll be left with... a ton of old Don Ho records.
People once thought paying for TV was ludicrous, too...

26. Sirius Left, Blues, Raw Comedy, Sirius Jam-On & Sirius Pure Jazz |
|
are all worth the price of programmers who really know their shit.
Sirius "Pure Jazz" & "Planet Jazz" is worth the price of admission...
Sirius _"Jam-On" - "Where we test positive all the time " has the best long rock jams heard anywhere.
No advertisements, no commercials!
Raw Comedy is very raw, Richard Pryor, Carlin, etc. uncensored...
If DJ's or callers want to say "fuck" and they always do...they say fuck!
The programmers for Sirius Blues, channel 29 is the best blues music anywhere in the country.
Sirius', "The Vault" "Left of Center" (great sounds) and so many others...again, they have some of the finest programmers in the world!

We get an awesome deal on XM from work. The receiver was about 1/3 the regular cost and I paid for a year recently so it's still $9.95/month. I wouldn't have bought it without the deal, and therefore I wouldn't have bought Sirius either.
I like it a lot. I was so tired of the regular radio stations playing the same songs over and over to death.
I also listen to a lot of talk, and I needed something other than RW nutso radio.
We have XM in the showroom too now. It's just the best, with no commercials. And we mostly listen to the 70s, 80s and the disco station.
