Just got a call from the ACLU |
|
Between the money they have spent on the recall and the challenge they are filing to the Patriot Act, they are a bit more strapped for cash than usual ...as you all can well imagine. If you can afford to donate ...please do so. They need our help. http://www.aclu.org/contribute/contribute.cfm

I'm a card-carrying member... Actually, I just got a 'survey' from the NAACP, in addition to an appeal for money. Should I join?

8. I never got a card from ACLU |
|
Is this a long-standing joke or do they really give out cards? I signed up months ago and paid my dues and was hoping to get the notorious "card."

I give a set amount to the ACLU every month. A small price to pay for freedom.

But with this Bush economy and everything I can barely afford food. Once my financial situation gets better I'm definitely going to send off some huge somes of money to DU and the ACLU ;-)

14. I can't afford it either |
|
but I still donate to the ACLU, DU, smirking chimp, PFAW and a few others. I look at it as an investment in MY future, because I really can't see me getting a job until bush is OUT, and these left-wing organizations are the ones working to get him out.
BTW - even sending $5 helps. That's not even a 6-pak (if you drink swill). If everyone who posted on these boards sent just $5 to the ACLU it would be a tidy sum.

12. I wrote them and said... |
|
... I'd be happy to support them, if they would withdraw from the case supporting 1st amendment rights for corporations. I gave them a detailed explanation of why corporations (artificial persons) were not entitled to the same rights as natural persons, and I got a somewhat condescending answer, saying, in essence, our position on this is on our website and you can read it there.
I have read their position and believe it to be contrary to the rights of citizens under the Constitution--that's why I wrote them in the first place. I can't throw money into a pot for those uses. Working to establish greater human rights for corporations furthers precisely the single greatest problem in this country today--the power of corporations to influence all aspects of life in this country--our political representation, our livelihoods, our foreign policy and domestic concerns.
If you wish to give to the ACLU, I would hope that you first insist that the ACLU give some regard for the basis of the Constitution as stated in its Preamble. It is written on behalf of "we, the people," not "we, the corporations." It was a serious mistake for the ACLU to engage in the Nike/free speech suit in California on behalf of Nike, and I suspect that it did so at the behest of its corporate sponsors.
Just a reminder that the ACLU uses some of that money you give to fight for Nike's right to evade truth in advertising laws. Nike believes that it has the right to say anything it pleases about its relationship to the Asian sweatshops making its shoes, because it has a First Amendment right to free speech. The ACLU supports Nike's contention.
Cheers.

15. Fuck the ACLU until they get their heads out of their asses on BBV. |
|
I mean this with all heart.
Anybody with half a brain, an ounce of integrity and a degree in computer science knows that unauditable electronic voting machines that don't output user confirmable hard copies are nothing more than fraud-made-easy-and-untraceable machines.
I'm not giving the ACLU one cent they might misuse to rush states to replace their bad vote counting systems with a far worse system.

16. I agree that BBV is a major issue, but... |
|
... the ACLU has done, and continues to do, lots of great work. There will always be some issue on which you disagree with any given organization or person, but there aren't many better places for your $20 (or however much) to go than to the ACLU.
Additionally, this recall suit has actually brought the BBV issue to the forefront. Many of the press reports I've heard about it have gone on to mention the controversy surrounding the electronic voting machines and the specific problem that they do not provide an auditable paper trail.
However, to bring up BBV in this suit would simply cloud the issue. The ACLU may very well move on that next... and the best way to get them to do so is to let them know how you feel and give 'em some money.
