daily kos claims meirs a victory for dems |
|
Sit back and enjoy by kos Mon Oct 3rd, 2005 at 09:25:16 PDT Several Democrats, including Reid, have already come out praising Miers, which ultimately will only fuel the right-wing meltdown on the decision.
I reserve the right to change my mind, but Miers' biggest sin, at this early juncture, is her allegiance to Bush. That her appointment is an act of cronyism is without a doubt, but if that's the price of admission to another Souter or moderate justice, I'm willing to pay it.
More immediately, this is the sort of pick that can have real-world repercussions in 2006, with a demoralized Republican Right refusing to do the heavy lifting needed to stem big losses. That Bush went this route rather than throwing his base the red meat they craved is nothing less than a sign of weakness. For whatever reason, Rove and Co. decided they weren't in position to wage a filibuster fight with Democrats on a Supreme Court justice and instead sold out their base.
We'll have several months to pick through Miers' record, as well as highlight her role in any number of Bush scandals (like Georgia10 notes).
But my early sense is that this is already a victory -- both politically and judicially -- for Democrats. In fact, it should be great fun watching conservatives go after Bush. He may actually break that 39-40 floor in the polls, given he's just pissed off the very people who have propped up his failed presidency.

4. Given the fact the a Supreme Ct. appointment is a life-time appointment, |
|
if she has any moderate tendencies, maybe they will flourish.
Appointments that are "for life" means that she isn't beholden to anyone politically in order to keep her job.

6. I would like to be more optimistic |
|
but I know little about her, and nothing good. The Dem contributions are encouraging, but not nearly enough. She called Bush the smartest man she ever met, and she is on record opposing the pro-choice position (for the ABA). The latter in itself is not necessarily bad, because I question the need for the ABA to take a position on this issue, but could provide a sense of where she stands.

I don't get this. Based on everything that's leaking out she's every bit the fundamentalist conversative nut job Bush is.

8. Remember, ultimately George Bush doesn't give a shit about the country |
|
It's all about HIM, and covering his own ass. This is a dream come true for a criminal like him; he's waged an illegal war and broken so many damned laws, and now, whatever happens, he's got two of buddies on the Supreme Court. Even if he can't expect rulings that excite the fundies who backed him, he's locked up a whole boatload of questions regarding his various nefarious activities. Bush has NEVER cared about the country, that much should be clear to us all. His narcissistic personaly disorder shines true to form with this nomination.

earful. Remember all the buzz about how Fat Tony was supposed to get the Chief Justice job? And if not him, ole "never speak from the bench" Clarence???
You just never know what will happen when a subordinate is, in essence, promoted OVER the boss...
I hope she turns out to be his Warren or Souter, but I really do not have a sense as to how it will play out.

It may give many who don't care for him comfort calling him a dimwit but he always manages to get his way. He's kinda the Roadrunner of politics. The coyote is really smart but everything blows up in his face.
This lady is probably to the right of Dr. Laura. Just wait and see.

18. Maybe, maybe not, I just do not know enough about her |

I often wonder if monkey buys his OWN bullshit. For someone who is such a rightie, he has lived his life on what the right likes to regard as the left, what with marrying a Democrat, dodging the draft, doing drugs, partying like it is 1999, spending the treasury like a drunken sailor, and letting his kids run wild. Of course, lefties do not do a lot of that stuff, but old stereotypes die hard.
Maybe he IS smart, and his legacy will be a liberal court...after all, what can they do to him after he is gone? Refuse to reelect him?? Too late for that! He'll take the money and flip them his famous bird.

Miers is all about cronyism and Bush is willing to give up all of his conservative values as long as he can pad the court with people that will always rule in BushCo's favor. There are a lot of indictments coming down and BushCo intends to litigate all the way to the SC on every case. Miers and Roberts will be sure to cover their bosses sins.

How people can view the appointment of a Bush crony to the SCOTUS as a "victory" for the Dems defies logic.

12. The women is pro- life, how does that make it a victory for the Dems?? |
|
During Miers' tenure as head of the Texas Bar Association she was a leader in the campaign to reverse the American Bar Association's pro-choice position on the right to choose. Had this campaign been successful, which it was not, the ABA would have been returned to its former position of neutrality. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/pp2/portal/files/portal/media/pressreleases/pr-051003-miers.xml

Her job will be to rule in accordance with whatever * wants, pure and simple. It's every politician's job to obey the President; he is the boss, after all.
Separation of powers is so 18th century.

16. she may not be as far right |
|
as some repukes wanted, but that in no way excuses Bush extreme blatant shameless gall in appointing her. and remember when evaluating her, she knew, repeat, knew all along what Bush has been up to. No one knows more about your screw-ups, failings, and evil motives than your personal confidential lawyer. Moreover, she has rotten judgment or is downright nuts if she thinks W is "brilliant"!
