Things to do in BC vs. Things to do in Manitoba: |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-31-03 08:54 PM by CanuckAmok
BC:
Ski. Surf. Sail. Surf the internet. Go to the Olympics. Rock-climb. Attend one (or more) of SEVEN world-class universities. Gamble. Smoke pot. Be in the movies. Hire expensive escorts. watch the Pacific Fleet sail out/return home. Watch great CFL football. Horseback riding and shit.
Manitoba:
Surf the internet Visit Portage la Prairie's water tower, painted to resemble a giant Coke can. Watch great CFL football** Horseback riding and shit.
**when the Lions are in town.

5. Remember "The Newsroom"? |
|
Whenever anyone was 'deported' from CBC totonto to CBC Winnipeg, someone always said to them:
"Don't worry, I hear Winnipeg has a world-class ballet" or "Don't worry, I hear Winnipeg has a world-class symphony"...

B.C.: Get beat up by street thugs in Squamish. Watch your cabin outside Kelowna burn to the ground. Repair not one, but two, flat tires on the Stewart-Cassiar Highway. Give a spare loonie to the drunks hanging around outside the Great Canadian Casino in Nanaimo.
Manitoba: See how fast you can drive the Perimeter Highway around Winnipeg. (Ticket results in disqualification.) Ask the mayor of Brandon if he knows the city is named after a character on "Beverly Hills 90210." Go shopping in Minnesota. Try to find a gay bar in Flin Flon.
Newsjock stands on guard for thee.

But I did spend two very interesting nights last fall at one of Squamish's lesser hotel lights. There were some very scary individuals, and lots of random fireworks all night long.
It's a beautiful place, but there are a lot of people there apparently with nothing to do.

|
"Little Green Men" = slot machine, inside "Big Green Men" = drunk with indigestion, outside
Seriously, I've (wisely or otherwise) wandered into a few of the Great Canadian Casinos outlets, and the one at that old, old mall in central Nanaimo was by far the most depressing of the bunch.
Heck, the mall wasn't much better, long having been surpassed by big-box hell at the north end of town.
Sheesh, now I'm getting it in my head that I should take my long weekend this week (Tuesday-Thursday) and spend it on the island. Do the motel rates go down from Insane to just Slightly Silly after Labour Day?

|
Particularly if you define "world" as the area inside the Winnipeg/Flin Flon/Portage la Prairie Triangle.
Nice grain elevators, though...I'll give them that!

TORONTO, ONTARIO, aka THE CULTURAL CENTRE OF CANADA.
National Ballet of Canada HQ: Toronto
Municipal Ballet of Canada HQ: Winnipeg.
American DUers might consider turning away now--it might get really ugly in here.

And I think it's pretty cool they sell beer at the ballet. Although I bet everybody tries to buy it at the same time--when the Zamboni is cleaning up.
Seriously, though. When I moved from Toronto to Vancouver in '95, I fully intended to visit every Canadian city inbetween, and completely missed Winnipeg--I was driving, driving, driving toward it, and then WHAM, it was in the rearview mirror! Do you guys have a cloaking device or something?!
