The cockroach scene gets to me every time.
On edit -- Brazil is pretty creepy, too, though it's not really supposed to be 'post apocalyptic' you sure feel like it was after it's over.

3. As far as books go, the obvious ones like |
|
1984 Brave New World Handmaids Tale
I'm interested in checking out Phillip Roth's "The Plot Against America" as well. It's more an alternative history than a dystopian future though. It's based on the premise that FDR was defeated by Charles Lindbergh (a known anti-semite) in the 1940 election, resulting in an administration that was friendly towards Hitler and began it's own method of eliminating Jewish influence through breaking up concentrations of Jews and spreading them thinly throughout the country so they could be separated and assimilated. Sounds like an interesting read.
Of course if the alternative history concept is interesting to you, you should also check out Harry Turtledoves excellent series based on a premise of the Confederacy winning the Civil War (currently the series continues through the period just following WWI, with a completely different structure of allies during the Great War, (i.e. Canada and the Confederate States allied against the US).

"the man in the high castle, by philip k. dick.
alternate history where the axis wins WWII and take over control of the US.
from the same guy who wrote, "do androids dream of electric sheep," the basis for the movie bladerunner, which was a cinematic masterpiece in my opinion.
