It's a very good song. Somewhat ahead of its time in terms of production (the female looped "sample" of 'Big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry').

In the 80's, an obscure group (for me) called Will To Power or something like that did a decent cover of it, too.

You guys are all kidding me. You mean that song that goes "I'm not in luuuve....oh noooooo...."
You guys LIKE that????
This really geeky guy in high school once left this message on my answering machine, I mean, singing this song!! But I don't like it separate and apart from him.

17. No, I love that song. But I love great pop craftsmanship.... |
|
And "I'm Not in Love" features a melody that any songwriter would envy, and the production is a decade ahead of its time. And I'm not some sappy easy-listening fan; my favorite band is Guided by Voices. I just like good melodies.
10CC were a great band, sort of a lusher British version of Steely Dan.

|
Edited on Wed Dec-22-04 01:16 AM by RandomKoolzip
Cowsills: Sure, never heard it, but if it's a good melody, then I'll dig it.
Seriously, though: that chromatic chord change up, from a seventh to a minor seventh a half-step above, under the third line of the verse, where they sing "Don't tell your friends you've got it made..." Speaking as a songwriter myself, most songwriters would give their first-born kids to come up with something that good.

27. There is some similarities b/t 10cc and Steely Dan |
|
Immaculately, slickly produced pop, married to sardonic lyrics. (10cc usually wrote songs with titles like "I'm Mandy: Fly Me". Steely Dan got very jazzy, and were much more beatnik. (And more commercially successful, too).

32. Right: the sardonic lyrics are the link. |
|
Plus they were both total studio-heads. 10cc were obviously more British than Steely Dan (less jazz chords, more Beatle-y pop production)

44. Also heard a 78 show with "If I had the world to give" |
|
nd I don't know what but it sounded like the band was mad at Jerry.
At the end where its supposed be a slow crescendo to peak in his solo, they like faded out, then he acts like he's going to end it so they build it up a bit, then he starts playing hard again and they fade out again on him.... WTF?

19. There was also Godley & Creme, the offshoot from 10cc |
|
They were the bit players in 10cc, and had a top 20 hit of their own in the 80's with "Cry".

21. 10cc had two songwriting teams... |
|
Stewart and Gouldman carried on the 10cc name after Godley and Creme left in 1978 to work with an instrument called "The Gizmo." That went nowhere, and they eventually got back to writing intelligent, lush pop (thank you, FinnFan!)
"Cry" was great video, too.

and it starts playing against my will quite a bit, so I guess that is why I hate it. not because it is a bad song, just because I associate it with my iPod going kaplooey

but then I grew to hate it because it would get played over and over and over.....I think it was a corporate plot to plant the idea in your head so that you would never fall in love, and then have to go out and buy stuff as a substitute.
