Please Daddy, dont get drunk this Christmas I dont wanna see my Mumma cry Please Daddy, dont get drunk this Christmas I dont wanna see my Mumma cry
Mumma smiled and looked outside the window She told me son, you better go upstairs Then you laughed and hollered Merry Christmas I turned around and saw my Mummas tears

31. I find it a bit ironic |
|
That this group prides itself on "acceptance".
They are comfortable with their size, and that's terrific. I truly am happy for them. I would never put them down for what they look like, what they eat, or how they choose to view their weight.
For some of us, though, the weight got to be health-threatening.
I had WLS. It has done wonders for my health. After 6 months, I've lost nearly 80 lbs. I no longer need to take blood pressure medication. The severity of my sleep apnea has lessened. My feet don't hurt as much. My back doesn't hurt as much. I have more energy and more self-esteem than I have in YEARS. I have (thus far) suffered no major complications due to this surgery.
It's been a positive thing for me.
But to read the posts over there, you'd think that this surgery is the worst thing anyone could do for themselves.
Yes, there are complications for many people who undergo the surgery. And yes, those who do not follow the rules can gain all their weight back.
But for every horror story, there are plenty of success stories.
I hope we're all still around here in a few years so that they can say that they know someone who had some success w/ WLS, and that it's not the butchery they once thought it was.

Telling someone that the odds are against her?!? Please, there are plenty of success stories of people who would otherwise be much worse off physically. It's not very constructive to say something like that to ANYONE, much less someone who has already HAD the surgery? Or did I misunderstand that?

You can't change her mind - its already done.
Look - with you it seems like you just like to complain - about this or that or the other. You say people are always attacking you and your wife - but it seems to be that it happens a lot - and for a lot of different reasons.
That should tell you something. Is it everyone else? Or is it me?
Think long and hard about that.

Seems akin to people who force an anti-choice agenda to me. |
|
Look, it's perfectly fine to criticize it, and there certainly have been many cases where it has proven to be a bad choice... and people should ONLY choose this option when there are no alternatives and remaining severely obese would result in more severe health problems than the risk of the surgery.
That said... to directly respond to someone who has already made that choice and already benefited from it, is personal. You can't stop this one from happening, so it's a waste of your time. There are plenty of other opportunities to discuss the risks of it elsewhere.

NONE. If she hadn't gone under then knife, she would have been dead within the year. No, a quadruple-bypass is not the same thing as WLS, and it's an older procedure. But the thought of someone going around telling people not to have potentially life-saving surgery, just because of the POSSIBLE side effects, is just fucking sick.

And I thank you for that.
I've fallen into some bad habits of late, but my blood work came back from the doctors all normal (so despite a lag in my weight loss, I'm still getting all my nutrients in).
I wasn't going to accept high blood pressure, sleep apnea, plantar fasciitis, back pain, bursitis in my hip and eventually diabetes--not without a fight.
I've yo-yo dieted for years. Nothing worked.
So far, this has. And given the drastic nature of what I've done, I feel much more motivated to continue w/ the healthy habits involved w/ WLS (proper eating, exercise) than I've ever felt before.

My own primary care doctor said that the risk of being my highest weight was HIGHER than any of the risks of surgery.
Mind you, she did not refer me to a surgeon. I approached her. She just backed my decision. She had no incentive to make such a statement about the surgery.

57. I'm glad everything has gone well for you, MissMillie. |

It can't be an easy road. And, I've often wanted to apologize to you for something I posted when I first came here. You were talking about wanting cake & I posted a big old picture of some. I didn't know about your surgery & what you've gone through. Might not be that big of a deal, but I am sorry. :-( :hi:

50. There are far more vegetarian haters than fat haters, even though |
|
vegetarianism and veganism are healthy and disciplined lifestyles, while fat-ism (if you will) requires laziness and overindulgence.

The simple fact is that it takes no discipline or effor to get fat and stay that way - quite the opposite... Being fat is a choice, insomuch as every individual has the free will to put down the ho ho's and get on a treadmill!
It's far too easy to sit and (get fatter) complain about everyone else.

73. There are some cases in which obesity is a medical problem |
|
not a willpower problem...not attributable to laziness and overindulgence at all.

It's sad to think that some people might be prone to it, but the simple fact remains... if you burn more calories than you take in, you will not gain weight.
The genetic predispostion to fatness is a crutch.

60. We all see things through our own filters. Probably if you are |
|
not fat you are not attuned to what is hurtful and hateful to people who are. I admit that I'm not fat so I don't necessarily see it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I am willing to be enlightened.
I am a parent who feels hated when I see long threads about "breeders" and nasty generalizations about kids. Maybe those who don't have kids don't see the hate, but I do. That's my prism.
So you can either care about how others feel or not.
