A question about a 60s song. It's a story song about a mountain and valley |
|
The people in the mountain kingdom have a treasure beyond worth, and the valley people demand they give it up. At which point the mountain kingdom says they're willing to share. The valley people ride up there and kill everyone, only to find out that the treasure is a message saying "peace on earth". Does anyone know the name of this song and the artist? It was a woman with a very high voice.
As an aside, has anyone noticed that disc jockeys aren't giving the information on every song like they used to? I wish they would go back to that so I wouldn't have to bother you all about it.

I thought it was 'tin soldier' but a search for that turned up another sad song about a tin soldier and a ballerina figurine in love who were separated. They were reunited years later, and vowing never to be separated again, dove into the fireplace and were consumed by the flames of love. Bummer dude.

(The Legend of Billy Jack) words and music by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter Copyright © 1969 by ABC / Dunhill Music, Inc.
Listen children to a story that was written long ago 'bout a kingdom on a mountain and the valley folk below. On the mountain was a treasure buried deep beneath a stone, and the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.
So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they'd kill. Came an answer from the kingdom: "With our brothers we will share all the secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there."
Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.
Now the valley cried with anger; mount your horses, draw your sword, and they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward. Now they stood beside the treasure on the mountain, dark and red, turned the stone and looked beneath it. "Peace on earth" was all it said.
Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend. Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end. There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.

Great pop-protest song; had a couple hit versions in the early-seventies. One was by the Original Caste (Canadian group, I think) and another one by Coven that charted twice and was in Billy Jack.

9. I'm glad a couple of other people remember that one... |

I always thought the Coven recording (which got picked for the movie, as I recall) was too overdramatic.
