I am just too damned political for a realtionship! |
|
My life is porgressive politics. Here in Arizona... that ain't such a good thing for the ladies! I have gone out on dates... many nights out with friends.... struck up a conversation... and intrests, work, passions always come up... and have given up. It ultimately comes around to politics.. and my work... my passions.. just is a huge turn off for the ladies.
What ever happened to smart, confident, feminists, whom love progressive activism in a man! :(
I can tell you in Arizona.. it just doesn't happen.
I am always plugged into work... 24/7. Becasue my work is social change. We are moving mountains!
But damn it... it is always a turn off at the bars :(
Sadly given up the search for a progressive woman :(

When you talk politics with most people, they look at you like you have two heads and then say, "I don't like to think about that stuff." Tedious. :banghead:

3. You'll have to decide which you want more. |
|
To have a relationship and learn to have other interests, or to wait for a girl so obsessed with politics that she'll rant at you and listen to you ranting at her.

My husband and I have been ranting at each other for 26 years. It can work out, and it is worth the wait.

I have a Bushie spouse in my house, but we still love each other and I've been told we are entertaining because of our opposite politics.

6. Nice guy chiming in here.... |

Don't give up the search. I came close to dating a republican once, but couldn't do it. After a bit of a search I found a wonderful gal who, while liberal, expressed no interest in politics. In a mere few months, she began to share my same passion for progressive politics and we frequently watch the news together to share our disgust at the current state of affairs. She's also begun to share my love of all things automotive : ). Don't give up, once people realize how politics affects their lives, they become far more interested in it. Best of luck.
Oh, and the whole thing about women not wanting a nice guy, don't buy into it. It may be true for younger girls, but I firmly believe that after a few bad relationships with jerks, most women would love to find a nice man to start a relationship with. Atleast the good ones do. Just my 2¢

7. Well, it's good they weren't wasting your time... |
|
I've done some thinking about dating, and perhaps you should be glad they didn't waste your time.
You could have ended up being with them for a while, and just break up over something else anyhow.
If they're not the girl for you, they're not the girl for you. The right woman is out there....so they say... :)

Eventually you will find a woman who shares your interests. Perhaps you will find that person when you least expect it. Stop searching, but keep your eyes and ears open.

Dude, if not, hubba hubba! Hey, Texas isn't that far from Arizona, and there's nothing sexier than an activist guy! You know, I got INTO politics partly to meet guys -- and I did meet a few, and then I got hooked, and now it seems like all of my poltical amigos are girls or married dudes for some reason. We got together last weekend and sat around telling stories about all of the stupid shit we did to register voters in the run up to the last election. I mean, we went into some BAD apartment complexes -- got thrown out of half the retail establishments in town, including a bar. Ah. Good times!

|
I haven't had a steady relationship in years. All the woman I have hooked up with in the last 10 years or so didn't last long because they wanted me to be what they wanted me to be. So, I don't look any longer and my attitude is... if I meet someone who digs me and I her, then good...if not, oh well. Anyone who has to give up who they are just to have a relationship is losing who they are for something that isn't going to last. That's my view on it.

I'm tellin' ya, if I were single right now, I would ONLY go out with someone like you. I'd want someone vibrant, someone ALIVE, someone working for change, someone passionate and involved and AWAKE, dammit.
You sound just like that description. There ARE women out there who would like that. But you will be more likely to find them in political meetups, Dem meetings, campaign rallies, etc. than in bars.
Seriously. Look around where you are making that change!!!
I find socio-political awareness to be a huge turn on in a guy. I'm married, but there can't just be one of me.

I was getting interested in someone last summer but I was all fired up against *, was working on defeating *, and I was outraged at all the injustices, and he wasn't concerned at all. He seemed mildly amused at my passion for change.
I dragged him to see F9/11. I gave him a Molly Ivens book. He didn't say much. I thought some of my interest in the world around me might rub off on him. We ran in a 5k together and I could tell he was embarrassed by my "Run Against Bush" t-shirt. I think he was too comfortable just being oblivious. Like an ostrich with his head in the sand. We didn't even last until the election.
How old are you, Kev?

25. Join progressive organizations and boards. |
|
I know you have heard it already, but maybe you need to join boards and organizations that are progressive in nature. Maybe you'll meet a nice liberal girl there...
Join the library board. Get involved with a free clinic or a consumer group. Habitat for Humanity... The local tenant's rights group... local community radio or even local community theatre... How about helping out the local Planned Parenthood? (Talk about a place that is chock full of women...)
You may not find Ms Right immediately but you will be doing what you believe in AND you will be expanding your circle of progressive minded friends and acquaintances. That sounds like a winning situation to me.

Why, just look at me.
I'll be 47 in a few weeks and I'm still single. And to think, I was the one who was gonna get married by the time I was 21.
Okay, then DON'T look at me.

28. A couple of cents from me... |
|
you could try presenting your passion in a different way. For instance, you could seem more reserved about it, but offer intelligent insight, while gradually increasing your interaction in a conversation. Also, marching in demonstrations and bravely facing the dangers of riot police could be very romantic to the most apolitical girl.
Anyway, I feel your pain. It does seem (to me, at least) that women do not like nice guys, and that politics is a turn off for many. Oh well. Just be yourself and you'll find what you're looking for.
