Do you think the movie /The Doors/ hurt Jim Morrison's image? |
|
A while back someone on here was lamenting that people think Jim Morrison is a big joke or a loser or something like that. I'm wondering if that Oliver Stone movie about The Doors had something to do with it, like if people thought Jim Morrison was really cool before they saw him kick the turkey and all that stuff. Oliver Stone movies tend to be pretty stylized and subjective.

1. the movie has nothing to do with it |

Way before Oliver Stone, people either loved Jim Morrison or they hated him, and it was always that way and always will be that way.
I doubt anyone other than you and I even remember that movie. Didn't it have like Meg Ryan?
I like Oliver Stone but not every movie made by anyone is going to stand the test of time.

3. I haven't even seen most of it. |

My friend was talking about how he kicks the turkey, so now when I think of the end of "Break On Through (To The Other Side)" instead of:
Everybody, loves my baby
I think of:
Everybody, kick the turkey
And now you will too.

4. Jim Morrison = Poser Supreme. |
|
The Stone movie helped, but even before that I was like, "Lizard King, my eye." Out of control people aren't attractive in any way to me, and it seems Jim thought he was being way deep and just wasn't.
That isn't to say that he didn't write two or three hot songs.

6. You know what? I went back to the original threads... |
|
...and found that you were like, one of the only people on the original thread where I said that it was a joke (the January 26th one): http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=105&topic_id=2510396The whole Oasis thing was probably so insignificant back then that you didn't even remember it.

That's too funny. Ok, going back to that, NOW I get it. :silly: You're right, that was way back before your long slow decent into Oasis madness. :7

Some of it seems to be pretty accurate, putting it way ahead of the pack in Hollywood biopics. Besides, if you've heard the recording of the Miami concert (3/1/69, the one that got him in hot water), you'll probably agree that the reality was probably more unflattering than the film could ever depict. Jim Morrison was totally sabotaging himself, and along the way he gave some horrendous performances...burned out just as he should have been burning most brightly.

10. I think Jim's suicide ws a good career move |
|
I'm firmly in the camp that believes The Doors music wasn't all that fantastic. It was a symptom of it's era with overplayed hooks over self indulgent lyrics.
The main musical competition of that era on the west coast were bands like The Mommas and The Poppas and The Beach Boys. I'd still rather listen to "Pet Sounds" than "Riders on the Storm" anyday.
