Why do I get pop-up boxes telling me how I can get rid of popup boxes? |
|
Seriously - this is the most bizarre ad I've ever seen. It's not a popup ad from the browser but just a solo pop box say that for $50 I can get rid of annoying popup boxes like the one they just sent me.
And you wonder why I'm not bothered by telemarketers
Then I realized my firewall wasn't adjusted properly, but still....annoying as hell!!

control panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services find the "Messenger" service; select properties and select " disabled" from the drop-down menu. That's assuming that you're using XP. 10. It's 2000 but I figured it out |
|
I had fixed up this laptop and finally put it on my DSL line. But my firewall wasn't adjusted properly; however, I also looked into my admin tools and cleared that one out too.
Thanks for the reminder!!

7. try google popup blocker |
|
I have it and it works ovwe 95% of the time. Sometimes one of those boxes slip in, but it's rare and never so disturbing that I can;t get my work done.

Although the Google bar is not a bad idea (spyware aside), these Pop-Ups are Windows-Messenger popups and not browser related.

But if you have anything for 2000, let me know. I could be wrong. Been ages since I worked on 2000 systems or did deskside support

Fortunately I saved these instructions - I later had problems with scumware and had to run Spybot to remove all the crap and that resets messenger. So I have these instructions handy to shut Messenger off. Those popups really ARE annoying. Linda
Windows 2000 1. Click Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> Administrative Tools->Services 2. Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" 3. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. 4. Click the STOP button. 5. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar 6. Click OK
Windows XP Home 1. Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel 2. Click Performance and Maintenance 3. Click Administrative Tools 4. Double click Services Scroll 5. down and highlight "Messenger" 6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. 7. Click the STOP button. 8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar 9. Click OK
Windows XP Professional 1. Click Start->Settings ->Control Panel 2. Click Administrative Tools 3. Click Services 4. Double click Services Scroll 5. down and highlight "Messenger" 6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. 7. Click the STOP button. 8. Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar 9. Click OK
Windows NT 1. Click Start ->Control Panel 2. Double Click Administrative Tools 3. Select Services-> Double-click on Messenger 4. In the Messenger Properties window, select Stop, 5. Then choose Disable as the Startup Type 6. Click OK
