1. I voted for Susan Sarandon |
|
a) because she's a great actress, and b) because she's my ideal woman.
It's getting harder and harder to ignore Nicole Kidman, though.

Because she keeps getting better with each role. In the last couple of years she's had Moulin Rouge!, The Others, and The Hours. I can't wait for Cold Mountain.

That b**ch can't act--not at all--it was the biggest travesty in the history of mankind that she won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While i don't agree with you that she can't act, and i was impressed with her performance in The Hours, i did think she was clearly outperformed by Meryl Streep. So, while i thought she was good, i did think it was a travesty that she won, since she wasn't the best actress in her own movie.
So, i'm agreeing and disagreeing. Now, that's different! The Professor

16. I thought Meryl was kind of hammy in this--thinks she goes over the |
|
top way too much.
But she was better, and Julianne Moore was the best in it, and had more screen time, and was in the supporting category.
Another thing about her getting it is really it was a supporting role.
And when someone wins an Oscar, they damn better well carry the whole movie.
Still,Nicole Kidman is one of the worst actresses around, and it galls me that she now gets roles that could go to good actresses.

17. This Time We Fully Disagree |
|
Not about anything critical, just details.
I didn't see the "over the topness" in Meryl's performance, because she was playing an overstressed, overwrought individual. For her to understate that would have been inappropriate.
I also am not wild about Julianne Moore. Don't dislike her, just doesn't absorb me into her character. I think SHE'S overrated.
Last point: There are LOTS of worse actresses than Nicole Kidman. And, i mean LOTS!
But, to each his/her own. That's why they don't make the exact same movie over and over, with all the same people, right? The Professor

18. Probably why they shoudn't give Oscars--it's all subjective |
|
Anyway, Julainne Moore was robbed this past year. Either her or Renee Zwellinger should have won--it's a travesty!

Um. I could not disagree more. She did not belong in this category at all. Simpering does not constitute a great performance. I am wholeheartedly underwhelmed by Zellweger.
I'll cautiously agree about Kidman, though - I do consider her somewhat overrated.

23. You see, she's so good, people don't realize it's acting |
|
Quite frankly, if she weren' so good in Chaicago, it would have been unwatchable. The musical (on stage) is heartless, and Roxy is a real bitch. But moviegoers expect some sympathetic characters, and Renee did a good job of that. She held up the movie--you believe she's Roxy, not Renee playing Rozee.
As for Nicole, she was so bad in The Hours it was laughable.

5. I just love Julia Roberts so much, and I don't know why. |
|
Frances is mad cool, as is Susan, and most of those other ladies...and I'm very proud of Halle's win...but Julia's my girl.
Grr, LOL. Gwyneth. Oscar. Don't EVEN get me started.

1. It was about GD time 2. She's the most flawless human I've ever seen 3. Her performance in Monster's Ball was astounding 4. Her reaction was priceless 5. It set up the all-time greatest Oscar kiss the following year (lucky, lucky Adrien Brody!)

7. Hilary Swank was magnificent in "Boys Don't Cry". |
|
IMO, that was a Best Actress award that was deserved.
2nd place: I was very pleasantly surprised by Nicole Kidman in "The Hours". Great acting.

as her performances always reach me on a very visceral level. I admire Roberts, Sarandon, Kidman, and McDormand very much, also. But my favorite leading lady remains Meryl Streep.

12. I have to choose just one? |
|
Oh, shit. I don't think it's possible. But my faves, in order:
1. Hollie Hunter - she absolutely fucking blew me away in "The Piano."
2. Jessica Lange - if I didn't think I was in love with her before I saw "Blue Sky" . . . She's moved me in every role she's played since "Tootsie."
3. Susan Sarandon. A goddess.
4. Frances MacDormand. Loved her in "Fargo." Was disgusted by the film's violence, but she was fantastic. She should've had the BSA Oscar in "Mississippi Burning," too.
I'd like to list Hilary Swank based upon the 30-seconds they showed on the Oscar show when she won, but it wouldn't be fair -- I didn't see "Boys Don't Cry."

(which is damn rare for me, I'm a contrary person), with one exception - I DID see Boys Don't Cry, and Hilary Swank's performance was simply jaw-dropping. She WAS Brandon Teena.

such as that awful serial killer movie, "Copycat" (which is apparently a cable staple) Even in that POS, she gives a magnificently rounded and nuanced performance.
