Mr. Writer watches First Blood on HBO and I HATE it. |
|
The opening montage is one of the goriest I've ever seen. (I don't like watching decomposing animals.) Then, as I'm in the other room trying to read, I hear roaring, screaming, slurping, and noises of agony from the television.
It's a horrible, unpleasant program just to listen to. Why Mr. Writer enjoys watching it is beyond me.

Man's struggle against the system that sent him to war. The other movies in that series were just cartoons.

It is gory but it is about vampires so that is to be expected. I didn't think I would like it when my husband wanted to start watching it, but I ended up loving it.

the imagery in the title sequence. It is a commentary on life (as opposed to the "un-life" of some of the characters.
Please note that the scenes of decay are juxtaposed with unattractive sexual imagery and extreme Christian ritual. We are supposed to understand that these 3 things, ugly and crass as they are, are part of the story of life: fornication, fate, and fear.
EDIT: I just realized I'm not often as amusing as I'd like to think, and this joke was probably offensive, so I replaced it with an edit.

14. I'm so confused!! Did you watch True Blood with vampires, or First Blood with Rambo???? |
|
First Blood was a good film ruined by sequels that made the main character an icon of empty violece. I don't remember any real gore, though, nor a lot of decomposing animals...

16. True Blood sucks, and not just blood, either. |
|
It is the world of trashy people and vampires and rampant ignorance and stupidity.
I've had enough of that after 8 years with Bush.

Or at least the first ep sucked. I was profoundly disappointed. I had been looking forward to the show for months ... I loved Six Feet under (which Alan Ball also did) and it takes place in the Loozyana swamps, which is always fun. But the end result was just stupid, and not because it was bloody. Stupid.

It juxtaposes sex, death and religious ecstasy on an almost literary level.

it's amusing so many of us have the same opinion of it yet watch it every week. I am watching the latest episode right now streaming on the internet. people waste no time uploading the newest episodes to the internets.

It gets uploaded to torrent sites really fast after it airs. Rome, my favorite HBO trashy drama, was the same way.

i am pissed they cancelled that show. I watch the Tudors, streaming, for my trashy period piece fix though it is in between seasons. I don't even have a tv where i live anymore and I don't miss it because i can find whatever i want somehow on the internet.

I just figured it had run its course. You could still continue some of the personal stories, but after Actium, things kinda settle down politically in the Roman Empire until you get into the reign of Tiberius, and then you may as well be remaking "I Claudius."
Actually, I would love to see the ROME crew tackle "I Claudius." Classic as the BBC version is, it is very stagy, both in the sets and the performances. A big budget with proper movie sets, and more naturalistic acting would be pretty awesome.
