38. Motown was pretty amazing.

It's weird - In a way Motown was exactly the sort of corporate, music-as-an-assembly-line, fluffy, image-cultivating, overproduced pop studio like the ones currently shoveling out piles of autotuned junk. But since they were able to draw from the huge talent pool of professional Jazz and Blues musicians (many of them second generation or more) that existed in the African-American communities of Detroit, St Louis and Chicago and other northern cities, they managed to make a lot of awesome music.

Probably also helped that the musicians had a say in both the creative output and the business dealings of the label.

52. That's...actually my favorite rock song of all time.

Because of the SOUND. (I give most of the credit to Maureen Tucker and John Cale, on drums and viola respectively.) I can't think of a single song out of the 60s with a sexier and more arresting overall SOUND. That's the one that will always make me drop what I'm doing, stop dead and listen, and get happy in the pants.


(But I'm Gen X; I was born 2 years after that album came out, so what do I know? :D)

I know it's a trite choice, but it is just so fucking perfect in every way, from the slow buildup from the beginning, to the pervasive sense of dread, and Merry Clayton's backup singing (She'd also seal the deal on "Sweet Home Alabama" for Skynyrd just a few years later). You really, really cannot create a more perfect rock song than this. It's almost too perfect.

Tossin' and Turnin' by Bobby Lewis. That song is a beast! Personally I enjoy 1950s rock-n-roll the best. There was joy in that music that went away as rock-n-roll evolved into rock music.
