Still unresolved musical controversy from the 1950s:
Perry Como was known as a "crooner' who sang mostly slow romantic ballads. And he was very good at it. In early 1955 he shocked the listening public when RCA Victor released "Kokomo" as a 45 single. Is this one of the first "rock 'n roll" records? Bill Haley and Elvis have long been considered the pioneers of "rock and roll for white people." But did Perry stealthly slip in the first blow? (note the 1-3-5 bass line and the R&B sax solo)
Listen and tell me whatcha think?

5. Love Rosetta!
Coincidentally my aunt had some "race records" she played for me one day. That's when I heard Albert Ammons "Doin the Boogie Woogie." Also she introduced me to Nellie Lutcher - a great singer/piano player from the 40s.

6. Nope, Bill Haley was the king of rock at that time
with "Rock Around The Clock." And that was the first record I ever bought.

9. Haley had already had rock and roll hits by the time that Como record came out.

And of course, Haley got his shit from cats like Louis Jordan, who were already playing this kind of music.
