Man rescued from quicksand in Utah after 8 hours
By Associated Press
POSTED: 08:41 a.m. HST, Nov 25, 2011

SALT LAKE CITY >> Utah authorities say they rescued a 25-year-old man who was stuck in a pool of quicksand for eight hours.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office says dispatchers were contacted at 5 p.m. Wednesday by a Florida military agency about an emergency alert beacon transmitting from an area along the Dirty Devil River.

Police tell KTVX of Salt Lake City a helicopter spotted the man stuck in a thick, muddy, wet substance.

Early rescue attempts were unsuccessful, but a search and rescue squad finally pulled him to safety early about 2 a.m. Thursday.

3. I have been stuck in quicksand
Shit's no joke.

I was walking along the edge of a lake and there was soft mud. I took a step and went in about two inches, then I took another step and went in up to my knee. I was totally stuck, and sinking fast. I was in up to my butt before I finally figured out how to extract myself.

The first thing to do is SIT DOWN and distribute your weight. Then instead of trying to pull your legs out, just dig yourself out with your hands and try to break the suction around your feet.

Apparently several people a year are killed in quicksand in the US. :o
