Mr. Scorpio, did I ever tell you the story about Beethoven's opinion of this piece? From what I understand, this is documented, and not an apocryphal story:
Evidently, Beethoven wrote to a friend complaining: "Everyone is clamoring for that C-sharp minor sonata! Surely, I have written better things!..."
I don't agree. "Moonlight" is startlingly beautiful. I never get tired of listening to it.

He thought it would detract from the reputation he wanted to build as a mathematician.
Arthur Conan Doyle couldn't understand why Sherlock Holmes was so popular. He insisted he had written better things.
