Chef Gordon Ramsay

Those of you who know me know that I haven't had cable for the last 4 years, and I have it again. One of the shows I've discovered (and LOVE) is "Kitchen Nightmares."

But I wanna know what YOU think about Chef Gordon Ramsay.

2. I've only seen one thing from him.

Someone here posted a youtube video of him cooking scrambled eggs. Best cooking advice I've ever seen. I've never watched him on anything else.

4. Love him.

I like his BBC stuff much better than the Fox crap. F-Word, Kitchen Nightmares, Ramsay's Best Restaurant and Gordon's Great Escape- all good stuff.

7. So far, I have only seen "Kitchen Nightmares," and I love it too.

The best shows, obviously, are the ones where he tries to "help" a vain, self-absorbed chef who's also a terrible cook.

15. Totally agree...

Those episodes are great lessons for dealing with malignant narcissists. It's amazing how they'll get with the program after being called out publicly by someone who isn't afraid of him. After sleeping off their dramatic meltdowns, they're suddenly all smiles and act as if the changes were their ideas anyways.

Beyond that... I like how he follows a very simple process/formula for quickly evaluating a business from the customers's perspective, simplifying and testing offerings, discovering who knows what they're talking about and who doesn't, then relaunching.

I'm actually pondering using his tactics for a narcissistic loved one who is running her business (not a restaurant) into the ground because she thinks she can do no wrong.

I've heard he is really nice in real life but his producers like to play up the assholiness for show.

One thing is for sure, dude can cook. Eating at one of his places is on my bucket list - bonus points if he is in residence at the time and can sit with us. (Cielo in Boca Raton is most realistic for us)

8. I doubt it surprises anybody to learn that Ramsay is one of my kitchen idols.

He's a great chef and a great teacher but he has no patience for those who don't want to learn or take advice from their betters. His lack of patience is brutality incarnate. I can understand that...if you're there, you clearly want to be/get better; if you don't want to be get better, then he doesn't know why you're there but you're wasting his fucking time.

I'd love to learn under Gordon Ramsay. I think anybody who is serious about food would love to, but you'd better be going in with a thick skin.

9. The best part of the shows I've seen...

...is when he goes out into the local community, gets a sense of its "pulse," comes back, re-designs the restaurant, creates a new menu, and fucking PACKS the place.

He KNOWS how to please diners. Part of it is local preferences, part of it is giving people what they want, part of it is surprising and delighting them with new and unexpected choices. And he seems to be a master of all three.

16. His consulting formula can be applied to any business problem...

Despite his yelling, he's actually an intense listener. He listens and takes ownership of customer feedback, acknowledges the local competition, and observes the existing strengths/weaknesses. When dealing with difficult owners, he sorta accelerates the experience of hitting rock bottom so that they become open to change.

I'm a web product manager by trade (not a cook at all), but I'd love to work for that show... doing background research, helping develop turnaround strategy options, etc.

20. You're right, and those are all very astute observations...

He just pushes the buttons until the conflicts and shortcomings reveal themselves.

21. I love him! I became a fan watching BBC's "Kitchen Nightmares". I liked him so much

I went online to see every episode of "Hell's Kitchen", which I liked even more. He's a perfectionist, which is why he's successful.

24. He's great....

Yes, he's an asshole when he needs to be. But he's also a fair, and (based on a lot of Kitchen Nightmares episodes) a fairly compassionate guy (yes, I know it's TV and I know much of it may be an act). He also does not seem to be as judgmental as a lot of celebrity chefs. I much prefer his harsh but fair asshole routine to someone like Anthony Bourdain who just cannot seem to get past his own view of himself as somehow being the last real rocker out there or whatever it is that deludes him.
