http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/solidarityforever/show_campaign.cgi?c=133Australia: Lufthansa call centre workers under attack
Australian call centre workers at a Lufthansa Airlines subsidiary, Global Tele Sales, are being forced out of a collective agreement which does not expire until December 2006 and onto individual contracts (known as AWAs) using harsh new workplace laws pushed through by the anti-union Australian Government. Each call centre worker will have to accept pay cuts of between 8-15 per cent. The workers forced onto these individual agreements would have to accept:
* A complex bonus scheme that will be virtually impossible to achieve - this scheme includes penalties for taking sick/carers leave which the ASU has legal advice that strongly suggests is discriminatory
* No guaranteed wage increase for the life of the AWA individual employment agreement
* Refusal by the company to negotiate with staff over the terms of the AWA
Lufthansa and Global Tele Sales would not be able to take this high-handed stance with European workers - why are they behaving in this way Down Under?
