Re this issue:
The debate over a street name quickly turned ugly Monday night, with tempers flaring and speakers dividing along racial lines. After a tense two hours, Zephyrhills City Manager Steve Spina put the decision before the City Council in historical terms. "There are places and people in this country whose name alone evokes memories of racial strife," he said, mentioning Selma, Ala., and Rodney King. "I'm asking you tonight not to put us on that list." Moments later, the Zephyrhills City Council changed the newly named Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue back to its original name, Sixth Avenue, becoming perhaps the first community in Florida to do so.
