1. Instant Campaign Finance Reform: Barack Obama is a one-man campaign finance reform program. He has won the nomination while eschewing big lobbyist money, counting instead on the more renewable resource of small donors. This ethic has led to today's development, #2.
2. The Democratic National Committee announced today that it will no longer accept contributions from registered federal lobbyists or political action committees. This isn't a certainty yet, just an announcement, but it certainly is a bold step toward solving the most essential political dilemma of our time, the tainting of politics with money.
3. A vote of confidence for Howard Dean as head of the DNC. It was announced today that Dean would stay on. Dean has been a sublime chairman, and with a real live Presidential Candidate Superstar, he should now be able to fly.
4. News out today is that Obama will run on the 50-state strategy, which they've already begun with Obama's visit yesterday to Abingdon, Va. The 50-state strategy is brilliant. Not only is it a better way to campaign for national office, but it creates a stronger political infrastructure for Congressional races. Obama's coattails are going to stretch behind him for miles.
5. A brand new shiny model for Democrats has been introduced regarding the issue of national security. Obama has introduced a way for Democrats to stop losing on this issue and to at last effectively make the case that it's the Republigoats, not we Dems, who suck at keeping us safe. To make this development even shinier, this approach was unveiled to AIPAC, one of the most hard-core acronyms in Washington—and it was received warmly.
