Some people will have to wait until Jan 2011 to see the 2010 changes on their health insuran |
|
The requirement to allow children to remain on parents' health insurance takes effect in late September. But, as most group health insurance policy benefits (and rates) are negotiated on an annual contract, there are some insurance companies that are refusing to follow those new rules until the new contracts take effect - usually Jan 1.
The insurers are interpreting the requirement to cover children with pre-existing conditions (which most group policies already do) and the requirement to insure children on a parent's health insurance up to age 26 as applying to group policies that are negotiated or that take effect after the requirements take effect. Since the existing policies were negotiated last year, for all of 2010, they are not going to follow the new rules until the new policies are negotiated and take effect on Jan 1.

2. Insurers predict that covering children up to age 26 will cause a 1% increase. |
