Idea for DU Forums 'Filter' Admin Take Note! |
|
To the Administrator(s) of the DU Forums:
Here's a labor-saving idea for you, when it comes to filtering out Freeper et al. posts on this board: set them up with some sort of automatic spelling checker, which automatically eliminates any post with an average of 1.5 or more misspelled words/punctuation errors per sentence.
Please, you don't have to thank me! ;)

1. You can't always trust Spell checkers, Robert... |
|
...just today one made me misspell Nurenburg (Germany) and it insists on calling Lake Eola (in Orlando) Lake Ebola...oh, and welcome to DU.

Thanks Dag--it's good to be here.
Anyway, I agree that spelling checkers do have their limitations, as your example makes clear. However, while your spell checker did fail to recognize the proper spelling of Nurenburg and a lake in Florida, I doubt that it would fail to catch such gems as "preditors", "DEMICRATS", or "Librul Basturds." ;)
Cheers,
Robert

4. Freepers aren't the only ones who spell poorly. |
|
There are a lot of, lets say, "less mature" apparent Democrats here who are also afraid of the English language.
But hey, getting rid of the idiots on both sides won't hurt anyone. Maybe it'll raise the level of discourse a slight notch.

10. Equating grammatical proficiency with intelligence is |

ignorant in the least & elitist in the extreme.
Don't get so hung up on the window dressing that you ignore the content.
My too sents :)
It's not how freepers spell, it's what they try to say with their mangled syntax that counts.

First I'm not so sure if want to see automated censorship anywhere. No wait: I'm sure; I don't want it at all. :P
Anyway, it would forbid many clever wordplays, as well as non-English citations and new word creations.
Not to mention: should you be able to name one computer program sophisticated enough to spot grammatical mistakes with a false positives count of nearly zero and few false-negatives, than I would be *very* surprised. Even more so should it work on any text, in that case I might feel forced to change my major.
Well, I don't punctuate well; I'm simply fighting with English leaned as a third language.

Uhm, just for the record, this 'suggestion' was made tongue-firmly-in-cheek. Oh, and as I must admit that--like most Americans--I only speak English, I'm hardly in any position to criticize the grammar/punctuation of any for whom English isn't their first language. ;)
Cheers,
Robert
