WASHINGTON, March 11 : The head of the largest federal union said U.S. workers are losing "one of their most steadfast friends" with the retirement of Sen.Paul Sarbanes, D-Md.
Sarbanes, 72, announced Friday this term would be last.
National Treasury Employees Union President Colleen Kelly said: "With the announcement that Sen.Paul Sarbanes will not seek re-election in 2006, federal employees will lose one of their most steadfast friends in Congress ...His five terms in the U.S. Senate make him the longest serving senator in Maryland history, and help make up a distinguished career spanning nearly 35 years as a federal legislator, including his years in the House of Representatives." <snip>
