LANCASTER, Pa. - Authorities closed the post office in downtown Lancaster for more than an hour Thursday after workers discovered a suspicious package in the building's lobby.

Lancaster Postmaster Lou DiPerna said the suspicious package was left in an isolated area near the post office boxes. He said the bag had a logo from a downtown shoe store.
"The bag was left in the lobby. We didn't know who it belonged to, and we didn't want to take any chances," DiPerna said.

Mark Hnasko, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service's Central Pennsylvania District, said inspectors described the incident as a "nonevent."
Despite waiting more than hour to take care of her business in the post office, Maureen Shannon of Lancaster accepted the inconvenience.
"The government doesn't take chances and will shut down a building for a few days if they have too," Shannon said. "That's just the world we live in now."
