Trial date set for Australian Guantanamo detaineeThu Mar 8, 1:43 AM ET
SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian terror suspect held in the US prison at Guantanamo
Bay for five years without trial will face a US military court on March 20, Prime
Minister John Howard said Thursday.
The announcement of a trial date came on the same day the government lost the
first round of a court battle aimed at forcing it to bring "Australian Taliban"
David Hicks home.
The Federal Court ruled that Hicks' legal team could argue their case that the
government had breached its duty by failing to ensure he had a fair trial, dismissing
a bid by Canberra to block the case.
Howard, a close ally of US President George W. Bush, conceded that there had been
an undue delay on bringing the Muslim convert to trial.
