A downtown Orlando church was briefly evacuated this morning after an usher reported finding a suspicious package near the church's door.
The Orlando Fire Department's bomb squad and hazmat unit responded to the St. James Catholic Church on North Orange Avenue and determined that the item was a harmless package of arts supplies, said Lt. Dale Reynolds.
A stretch of Robinson Street was closed down while the fire department inspected the package. The whole thing was over by 10 a.m. and church services resumed.
Reynolds advised residents who find suspicious packages to leave them alone and immediately call authorities.
