Friends mourn Radford girl’s tragic death

After back-to-back news reports of a dangerous man on the loose in Radford on Friday, a 10-year-old boy felt the urge to protect himself and his sister while they waited alone at home for their parents to get off work, according to a family friend.

He searched high and low until he found the key to his father's gun cabinet.

The gun accidentally went off, the friend said. The single bullet hit his sister, ending Jessie Nicole Kessinger's life at the young age of 14.

Radford City Police are still investigating the shooting that happened in the 1000 block of Preston Street on Friday afternoon. "We have no reason to believe the shooting was not accidental," Detective Andy Wilburn said.
