Since 2010 nearly a dozen such shootings in the region have left a victim critically injured or dead -- a dramatic increase from prior years when such cases typically were reported only once or twice annually, according to police and media reports.

"Accidental discharges don't really happen. It's a negligent discharge," said Will Farrugia, a South Florida firearms instructor. "If you don't pull the trigger, the gun will not go off."

Of 11 serious accidental shootings reported in Broward and Palm Beach counties, all but one involved a semi-automatic handgun.

"Every gun manufactured today comes with a lock," said Mike Caruso, owner of the Delray Shooting Center in Delray Beach, who expressed frustration over cases in which children were able to get their hands on a firearm. "I just don't understand the lack of common sense."
