If Pres Elect Obama does not repeal Shrub's tax cuts for the rich as advertised - what's the payoff? |
|
Looks like President Elect Obama may not repeal Shrub's tax cuts for the very rich after all; rather he would just let them expire in 2011 (per Keith on Countdown tonight).
Parody within our tax structure was a staple of his campaign, I am surprised and disappointed to hear he may make this compromise. Why? Why would he do this? What support from the rethugs is he leveraging in return?
On balance, I remained thrilled Barack Obama will be our next president. He will do far, far more right than wrong; but this delay of tax parody is not what I expected, particularly given the fact Obama campaigned so vigorously to make it happen ASAP.

Now my memory is legendarily awful, but wasn't Obama's healthcare plan going to paid for by repealing the tax cuts ASAP? What's going to happen with that now?

2. You have to remember that Obama is facing an entirely different |
|
situation now than when he made those promises literally years ago...
Now to let them expire will allow for tax planning as well as to get people behind whatever stimulus package he is going to have to put in place...
And if you think about the situation from a political situation, it is foolish for Obama to let the tax cuts expire right before he is up for re-election. This alone tells me that Obama is more concerned about cobbling together the coalition needed to pass his stimulus package and get the country on the right track than some political gamesmanship three years down the road.

Ultimately, after such a brilliant campaign I can defer some disappointment to the assumption he knows what the hell he is doing. I certainly can give him that benefit of doubt.
Many of us assumed he would be a little to the the right of what many on DU would ideally want --- well worth it to turn the White House BLUE!! Yet I hope he does not go too far as to alienate such a passionate and dedicated constituency --- here on the liberal blogs (as the corporate MSM likes to say). Some principles are also not worth compromising --- at any cost!
When the dust settles, I remain faithful that President Elect Obama will honor his pledge on the tax structure. Even a couple of years delayed, I'll hold him to that. And also expect he will easily win in 2012 for his second term. :)

Giving the rich fucks more $$$ (or continuing a unfair system) - absolutely! Buzzkill for sure.
But the players are changing DiverDave and ultimately, Obama will change the game as well! I'm confident in that. It just may not be as fast or as "left" as we ideally want. No way the game will ever, EVER be the same as that which was played upon the American people by the criminal regime of Shrub and Shooter.
I may diss a decision here and there, but Obama is the man to bring change! Won't ever diss the BIG picture --- on the contrary, I'm very grateful.

7. It will give Obama a ton of political leverage |
|
and it isn't a good idea to raise taxes in a major recession. After the economy stabilizes, then he can start raising taxes.

Tho not seeking it to be perfect.
Just because I'm thrilled Obama won, does not mean I won't question authority - even an authority I worked like heck to elect!

but as I understood it, he had planned to let them expire. He is brilliant and I trust him. I listening to his audio book DREAMS FROM MY FATHER. It is great to hear his voice reading it.

three things: Obama said he would change tax brackets, he never said he would repeal any law
and congress is the only authority that can change the law, Obama can sign it or veto it.
third: what the hell is wrong with you people claiming this or that when Obama has not been quoted as saying anything other than what he said: "will raise taxes on those making over $250,000 a year."
