Bayh now supports health-care debate on Senate floor

SOUTH BEND — Sen. Evan Bayh is now in favor of bringing the health-care debate to the Senate floor, a day after he told CBS News it may not be worth even "starting a discussion."

A brief statement today by Bayh's staff confirms the senator will support moving forward to a debate, where Bayh "will work hard to address his concerns and craft legislation that reduces deficit and lowers health care costs."

Bayh told CBS on Wednesday that he may not support a motion to proceed, depending on what the bill includes, especially if changes weren't made to the $800 billion plan. There was talk that Bayh may join the Republican ranks in filibustering a debate on the reform.

Brian Weiss, a Bayh spokesman, said today's decision doesn't necessarily mean he's leaning one way or another on the issue.

It is unclear what led to his decision today.

The announcement came on the same day Indiana members of MoveOn.org, a political action group, say support for Bayh's re-election hinged on his health-care reform vote and whether he joined the Republicans to block an up-or-down vote. Bayh's stance on an up-and-down vote is unclear.

Good luck finding a good solid progressive Democrat here (running for office and able to win a statewide election, anyway)! :eyes: There are some right-wingers here who actually complain that Bayh is "too liberal" (which says a lot about how ass-backwards Indiana is politically- hell, we elected Bush's budget director to TWO TERMS as Governor and he is quite popular too and being floated as a GOP Presidential possibility! :puke:) Bayh is a putz, however, and needs a serious "attitude adjustment". I didn't like that he seemed to support a lot of Bush's policies when he was in office but I really began to actually LOATHE him when he announced his intention, along with a few other "Democratic" Senators to be ready and willing to "stand up" to President Obama politically practically as soon as Obama was sworn into office. IMHO it's one thing to occasionally not vote with your party's President on some issues but I think that it's politically treasonous to announce that you're essentially going to treat them like an adversary. It's almost as though he's acting like he thinks Bush is still POTUS and that the Democrats are not in the majority in Congress and have the WH as well. Inconceivably, I actually dislike Bayh even more than our Senator Lugar (who I actually have some genuine respect for). Wierd, eh? :crazy:

9. Slightly encouraging, but more 'slight' than 'encouraging,' and let's see

how Ambitious Evan follows through on this.

There's the conflict of interest question with his wife and there's the sour grapes issue after his candidate only barely, barely, barely won the Indiana primary.

That night Ambitious Evan must have saw the returns coming in around Indiana and realized that his shot at the Vice Presidency was blocked that evening. IMO he would certainly have been on HClinton's short list for veep, if not the choice outright.

It would also be interesting to learn who exactly persuaded Ambitious Evan to step aside months before the Iowa caucuses. One has one's suspicions.

13. I know that I will not vote for Bayh in 2010 if he votes against the bill.

And if he votes supporting the filibuster.

And there are plenty of groups in Indiana that generally vote Democratic that can be encouraged to not vote for the Senator in 2010 because of this issue. There have been enough stories of Bayh not responding to his constituents in a reasonable fashion and addressing the issue of concern. When it comes to constituency services Senator Lugar does a better job than Bayh.

I won't vote for Bayh's opponent in the General Election but I don't have make a selection in that particular race. I don't expect Bayh to lose but I believe that if the grassroots is strong enough he will win by just a small margin which will scare the hell out of him.


Personally, after listening to his explanation Saturday regarding the issue of health care reform and energy dependency he is an idiot. He does not understand the implications of either.
