So my husband is thinking of running for sheriff |
|
Anyone in Houston Co? Also posted in GD politics.
And we've decided we need to seriously start researching this. I'm going to call some ppl I know locally in the party tomorrow. I think he's a good candidate locally--35yo, 8 years active duty as an MP, 4 years NG and 2 of those deployed as an MP, and 4 years with the "big city pd". And oh yeah, he's a Dem lol. Our current sheriff is also a Dem. Dems are not popular here but our sheriff has had his job about 12 years. He says he isn't running for re-election and he isn't big on doing anything law related that might piss ppl off so I think we could beat him in a primary easily. My question is, what do you want to know from someone running for sheriff? What do you think qualifies someone for running for sheriff? Do you think a college degree is necessary for running a sheriff's dept?
Thx in advance and I'd be happy to add if someone has a specific question.

and am sorry I haven't yet replied. I am having a very hectic week, but will try to post again on this late tonight or tomorrow. In the meantime, I encourage other Alabama DUers to show their interest and support for our sister here....

5. Me too lol re: the hectic week :D |

It was our district's last week of school. Whew! Glad to be out for the summer, and I'm just a sahm lol. ;)
The general consensus locally is that he should be 3-4 years older (particularly amoung the pd crowd and dh works for Dothan pd) and have a lot more volunteer work behind him. I'm somewhat involved with national guard family support groups, and getting more involved. And he is going to look at the local United Way and Catholic Charities. Hubby really wants to run, but he doesn't want time and money wasted on him that would be better suited to another candidate. Right now, we're still in observation mode. ;)

2. sounds qualified to me |

Good luck to your husband. I think the Tuscaloosa County sheriff is a Democrat, but if you ever come across him, please be sure not to get between him and a tv camera. It could be fatal... he shares a certain affliction with Jesse Jackson.

ever run for public office before?
You might want to check out Democracy for America, the organization that Howard Dean started before he became DNC chair. They are dedicated to helping Democratic candidates at the grassroots level.
