Where did all the money go? The short answer: to keep Don Young Inc. running. The campaign office for the Alaska Republican operates year-round, in election years and in off-years. His re-election committee, Alaskans for Don Young Inc., owns the campaign headquarters building at 2504 Fairbanks St. in Midtown.
About one-third of the money went to campaign mailers and to television, radio and newspaper advertisements. Much of the rest was spent on salaries for his campaign staff, fundraisers, consultants and travel, according to his reports to the Federal Elections Commission. In the end, Young won his 18th term.
No one on Young's campaign staff responded to requests for an interview. His campaign treasurer, accountant Robert J. Bohnert, twice was reached by phone. Both times he hung up as soon as he heard it was a Daily News reporter on the line, before a single question was asked.
