I'm not sure what this is all about, but I need to interrupt to celebrate the victory of Mark Begich over Ted Stevens. For many years, many Alaskans have wondered what happened to the promise of statehood -- when we elected such giants as Bill Egan, Ernest Gruening, and Bob Bartlett. Somehow, the possibilities those greats represented were snatched from us in the 1970s, when Big Oil took over. But now we can celebrate the return to our promise. Sarah Palin and Lisa Murkowski will be swept away in 2010, and we can once again stand tall among the panoply of great states of a great nation. CONGRATULATIONS, and

I always assumed it was Big Oil that corrupted Alaska, but it seems like our own homegrown Republicans had a hand in it, too.
